Interview with Slow Motion Suicide

How did the band meet The Old School Project?

I think we met with Nick through Reverbnation, he was fond of our release and so the connection was born. He's a cool man and we love what he does in general. Patience is a virtue in this business so arm yourselves with it.

Could you explain how the band was formed? And the reasons behind it?

I started writing material during a long period off . When I decided to release the music it received an incredible and overwhelming response and as a result, Slow Motion Suicide was born. The band was formed pretty randomly, through mutual acquaintances and friends of the band.

You describe yourselves as “ A collective of human beings crafting melodies for maladies in the 21st century”, Could you explain how this statement relates to your music?

Basically, just writing what we feel like in this moment in time, not giving too much regard if it fits a certain genre or if someone will like it or not.

What is the meaning behind the group name Slow Motion Suicide?

Name of the band comes from the idiom of everything pretty and ugly that is slowly and unknowingly killing us, like junk food after a bad hangover, witty beautiful women, cigarettes after sex, guilty conscience, or laziness in the Sunday afternoon

In my review I compared some of your songs’ sounds to early Alternate bands like Alkaline Trio, Who were your biggest influences on your music growing up?

Everybody in the band listens to different music genres but we all love, let's say, midtempo alt rock. Pretty much grew up on REM, Counting Crows, Red Hot Chilies, Incubus and hip hop. A lot of hip hop.

Who would you say is your main songwriter? And what inspires you to write songs like you do?

I come up with the skeleton of the song and the lyrics and then the band works on their parts from there. It can stay mellow and acoustic, or it can turn to a powerful full band song. I'm a pretty proud neurotic dude, so I guess I draw inspiration from there.

Some of your songs are raw and relatable, what is your writing process behind them?

Just an acoustic guitar, coffee, maybe a hangover and a quiet place. Sometimes you can work on a song for 15 minutes and sometimes it takes a couple of months. You can't really tell how long is it going to take, but you just know when it's done and requires no more discussion and polishing.

What are your overall goals in the music industry?

Play live as much as we can, that's the way to go.

Do you have any favourite bands at the moment?

Sure, we listen to a bunch of things. There are some cool cats on Croatian music scene like She Loves Pablo collective. Check them out, they might be up your alley.

I recently reviewed your self- titled debut LP, could you tell me a bit about it, and the recording process?

Thanks man, appreciate it so much. The process was a bit long because we were all new in this thing and didn't really have a producer, given the fact that I pretty much knew what I wanted to create for the first record and just wanted the songs to be out. We recorded in numerous locations with friends over a period of six months and it turned out great, don't you think?

And finally, what is next for slow motion suicide?

Actually, I did lay some demos down for the next record and I'm happy that we'll start working on those pretty soon.

Thank you very much to Slow Motion Suicide for this interview.

An Interview with Sometimes Julie

Sometimes Julie are another band I had the pleasure to cover during the recent campaign for The Old School Project. The San Diego Natives' Rich Walker spoke to me about the band's origins, influences, and their latest album Breaking

1. Please could you tell me how you discovered The Old School Project?

You discovered us first! We discovered you when you tagged us in a Facebook post in November 2018.

2. Could you introduce yourselves? And furthermore, please explain how the band originally formed?

Sometimes Julie was founded in 2012 by Monica Sorenson and Rick Walker as a singer-songwriter duo. After recording our first album, Head First, we decided to form a full band. Sometimes Julie has had a few different line-ups since our formation, but we are currently a six-piece band, made up of:

  • Monica Sorenson – Vocals

  • Rick Walker – Guitar

  • Alberto Moreno – Guitar

  • Bruce Paul Allen – Bass

  • Anthony Sarain – Keyboard/Saxophone/Flute

  • Michael Heater - Drums

3. What inspired you to form Sometimes Julie?

We started out as a duo, just Monica and Rick, but we recorded 13 of the 14 songs on our first album (Head First) with full rock band instrumentation, so we decided to recruit more musicians and form a band, so we could do the songs justice when performing them live.

4. Your bio describes your music as “Provocative Indie Rock with a strong Americana influence”. Would you say this is an apt description of the music Sometimes Julie is trying to make?

Sometimes Julie’s music is a product of all the music we heard as children and teenagers. Rick grew up in Chicago, immersed in blues, roots rock, power pop, and (later) alternative rock. Monica grew up in the western U.S. (mostly in Denver), with classic rock, pop, and country influences. What comes out of us, and what we now describe as provocative indie rock with a strong Americana influence, is really just a mashup of all of the music that has touched each of us over the years.

5. How did the band get its name? I noticed there isn’t a Julie in the band. Ha ha

Haha! Monica is sometimes known as Julie. She is a little protective of her privacy, so she used to us the pseudonym “Julie” when her name was going to be announced in public, for example, when she would place an order in a coffee shop, or when singing Karaoke. When Monica and Rick first met (at a Karaoke bar), she told him her name was Julie. We knew each other for six months and had already started writing songs together before she told him her real name!

6. Who were the band’s influences? I feel the vocals share similarities with Alanis Morrissette and Janis Joplin. Who where some of the singers that inspired you?

Janis Joplin is definitely an influence, but also Lucinda Williams, Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Grace Potter and others. Male vocalists also inspire, especially Robert Plant, but lately Lukas Nelson and Tom Walker.

7. Your first EP, Head First won the band an Akademia award for best Americana music video. How much has this helped with the band’s development?

The Head First CD, and also the video we produced for the title track, won Akademia awards. It definitely gave us confidence and legitimized us as musicians and performers. It also helped solidify our sense of who we are as artists and encouraged us to take bigger risks in our songwriting.

8. The band recently released Breaking in June, could you explain to readers a little about what to expect?

Breaking is raw, honest and powerful, while at the same time thoughtful and well-produced. It has themes of failed love, loss and fury. The music, lyrics and performance all come from, and speak to the heart.

9. Breaking is your third release, have you found the writing process has changed, or is it still the same?

Early in our collaboration, we did most of our writing together in the same room. Lately, though, Monica has been doing most of the initial writing of lyrics and melody, with Rick later developing instrumentation and arrangement. One exception on Breaking was “Satisfied”, where Rick wrote the music first, then Monica added the lyrics and melody.

We’re aren’t attached to any particular songwriting method, though. Whatever works…works.

10. You have a concert at De Oro Mine Co. in Spring Valley California coming up, what can people expect from that gig, and furthermore, Do the band plan anymore dates in the new year?

Sorry we’re so late answering these questions! We just played at De Oro Mine Company in Spring Valley last weekend and it was a blast! Here’s what we have on the calendar right now:

  • January 19th, Indian Joe Brewing, Vista, California

  • February 28th, Humphrey’s Backstage Live, San Diego, California

  • March 29th, Navajo Live, San Diego, California

  • April 20th, Hennessey’s, Carlsbad, California

All Sometimes Julie shows are engaging! People can expect to laugh, rock, dance and have a great time!

11. Finally, what else can fans expect from Sometimes Julie in 2019?

We’re currently working up our newest songs for our 4th release, which we will be recording in the next six months. Look for Own Kind of Savior by the end of 2019!

Heidi Burson

Heidi Burson’s story as an artist is one of shared human experience. Very early on, she felt the poignancy of the music of singers such as Etta James and Aretha Franklin. She was struck by the power and intensity with which they expressed the longing, which we all share, for love and acceptance. These influences, coupled with her own life experiences and a generous dusting of wry humor, have helped to forge a voice and style that is uniquely fascinating.

The States

The States. It represents an idea that we are all apart of a community that has the freedom of expressing ourselves through music. Our name isn't necessarily related to the United States or anything necessarily patriotic even though there are those themes throughout our brand. Rather it's more about the representation of the states of emotions we are all in from time to time. Happy, sad, introspective, broken, angry, depressed, or in love, we wanted our music to reach out to everyone.

Hedera

Sharing a collective love for vintage timbres and instrumental variety, digital processing and samples are absent throughout their performances and recordings, instead preferring the likes of reel-to-reel effects and djembe percussion. With a name translating to “Common Ivy” in Latin and a logo representing a new approach to traditional mediums, Hedera’s persona is reflected in their imagery: a vibrant, multicolored ivy leaf. The entirety of the band’s art direction is designed by lead guitarist Anthony Formisano.

GENTE DEL SUR

Mediterranean Trip-Hop, combining rhythms from the Latin Funk Jazz Sou R & B & Reggae with flamenco melodies.

Including the first single "La Gente Del Sur" (Dub Mix) in the American album "Pause & Play" published on June 10, 2016.

The Noble Impoverished

The Noble Impoverished is a wild fire. A sound influenced by bands like The Killers, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and many others

The Noble Impoverished is the creation of two brothers passion for playing music. At the age of 15 and 17 they picked up their fathers old classical guitar and lost control to Rock & Roll. After a few years of playing in Morgantown West Virginia they moved to Connecticut to showcase this raw sound to a larger stage. The bands deep roots in rock n roll drives its intense live performances, their strong melodies colliding with a savage energy that makes their show something not easily forgotten.

NIALAND

A sound so melodic, so soulful, so eclectic and full of passion and purpose…a style so powerful it reaches audiences of all kinds. A style like that is rare, and yet that style is synonymous with the sound of Nialand. Nialand, or Nia which she is most known as, is a style all on her own. Self-described as weird, her gift is creative, full of truth, mixed with some edge and delivered in a plethora of harmonies and smooth tones that is incomparable and sets her apart from many artists today. Influenced by Jazz, Classic Hip Hop, and Soul Music, Nialand puts her heart, soul, experience and truth in her music presenting an undeniably powerful musical experience.

Vajra

Vajra was formed by composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Annamaria Pinna during her self-imposed exile in India. The child of a former monk and school teacher, Annamaria was encouraged to learn about the world around her and to question her assumptions. She believes there is divinity in creativity. Annamaria has a neurological condition called synesthesia, where she attaches color and shapes to sound.

The Humidors

“Everything The Humidors play is given a heavy contemporary spin that splinters dance floors and leaves audiences in a sweaty daze. The band is a well-oiled unit with a polyrhythmic approach that balances short, sharp solos with an overwhelming collective approach.” - J. Poet, SF Weekly Hailing from the Bay Area, The Humidors have been churning out their own unique brand of party music for half a decade. Combining elements of hard-hitting funk, greasy soul, vintage R&B, soul jazz and more you can be sure that this eight-piece unit is committed to the groove in all its shapes and forms.

Mama’s Madness Quick Review

Mama’s Madness are a Three- Piece Rock n Soul band from Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania that are known for their high energy performances. The group consists of Brad Gelphart ( Vocals, Harmonica, Guitar) Kevin Brennflek (Bass) and Joey Maglicco ( drums) . They are said to be influenced by James Brown, AC/DC and Creedence Clearwater Revival, which is apparent from the beginnings of the band’s self- titled debut . A Seven-track LP that produces a half hour combustion of classic rock, soul, country and blues topped with the band’s own trademark energy.
Mama’s Madness is an enjoyable celebration of impassioned vocals, muscular riffs and humorous lyrics that is easy to feel an instant liking for this band. This LP is a good start to take in the journey to discover what makes the band tick.

Opener WooHoo, begins with the pulsating howls of Gephart over a slick groove sets the mood that culminates in a catchy chorus that’ll leave listeners humming.

Next is the countrified Long Time , which is two minutes of knee slapping fun with its upbeat rhythm.

Lonely one is a more melodic track that focuses on heartbreak. The opening one minute acoustic intro sets the tone for a more pop -laden flavour enriched with angst and bitterness.
https://open.spotify.com/track/2KeENQy6tHmitYS0ydFfMt?si=O8Q8FmSRTFGvARtN27fcaw
Superstar is a two minute explosive acoustic track. Gephart’s lung- busting screams are accompanied by the up-tempo rhythm he matches with aplomb on guitar. The singer’s song- writing grows with each track he writes on with a keen eye for observation and humour. This song is an example with its satirical tales of being a superstar.

Giddy up is the standout track clocking in at over 5 mins. It swaggers along to an with an aggressive blues rhythm that slithers along like a snake waiting for its pray. Gephar’’s vocals are sly and clear like a certain Bon Scott in his heyday. This combination works to effect on this track about being an outlaw.

Almost Free is another track drenched in all the sleaze and attitude as the previous track. Another enjoyable tune which highlight Gephart’s vocal range between full -throttle howls and a snarl that purrs over every insatiable word complete with a dirty bass sound that crawls along to every emollient syllable expressed.

And finally, the album wraps up with the rockabilly Loco, a song about been driven crazy by a woman. A flamenco- enhanced tune with beats that embody personality and guile. This is a band that have an arsenal of talent that can certainly appeal to a more global ranging audience with a rumbling Rhythm section and fun songs written for enjoyment.

Jennifer Perryman

Bio...hmmm.  What shall I say?  Music's great!  I really like it...alot.  In fact, I enjoy it so much, that I've spent my life emersed in it.  I've made a modest career out of it, playing and singing in every kind of bar, nightclub, restaurant, and hotel, doing every kind of party or event where music is on the agenda for years.  I'm also in the studio quite a bit, doing everything from original projects, my personal favorite, to corporate backup tracks, radio spots, and jingles.
I play and sing different styles...everything from jazz, pop, and R&B to, well, I guess I should say country since I am from Texas. I like all types of music from all eras, starting with great composers like Chopin, Scriabin, and Debussy.

Sly Fox and the Hustlers

New York's Sly Fox and the Hustlers are a high energy original 4-piece Bluesy Rock N' Roll band with hints of Soul, Funk and a dash of Punk. Established in 2010 the band has shared the stage with National Recording Artists - Blues Traveler, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robin Trower, Burton Cummings (The Guess Who) and Sam Kininger (Soulive), Twiddle and Sean Rowe among others. The band is made up of an all star cast including the powerful lead vocals and blues-soaked guitar of Sly Fox, the throbbing funky bass playing and smooth backing vocals of former Epic recording artist Dylan Storm, the swirling keys of Drew Costa and rounding out the group is the solid in the pocket drumming and showmanship of Sean Ireland. The live show has been described as "Heavy Voodoo Blues over Swampy Funky Grooves" and “an exciting show not to be missed - guaranteed to get you on your feet!"

Sule

Sule is a consummate, active professional. His music reflects the high premium he's placed on attention to detail and striving for excellence. His career has spanned many genres, such as Folk, Rock, Jazz, Blues and Gospel to name a few. These styles are seamlessly woven into a tapestry that is the essence of Sule's sound. His songwriting and stage show are examples of how dedicated he is to his audience, and to his craft. He has released two albums under his own name and is currently working on acoustic material for a third.

The Rift

We are a hard rock band based out of Los Angeles with an edgy driving twist on rock music. Traditionally, a rift is an open space. It’s a place of possibility and promise. Los Angeles hard rock trio THE RIFT lives up to its moniker.

Bassist JOHN ANAGNOS says, “The name is the best way to describe the band, what we do, and the experience we portray live. The songs are meant to be an opening, and there’s a lot you can find within them.”

RAZTERIA

A one of a kind breaking of all rules. Razteria won grand prize in the JLSC 2016 for the song "Once Again" co-written with rapper Rahman Jamaal, from her 5th album "Aventurera" (2016). In 2017, Razteria brings together musicians, producers and engineers from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, USA and Switzerland in a new repertoire that crushes all musical and cultural boundaries.

Under The Lake

"Effervescent, vivacious and all-together engaging" is how smoothjazz.com describes Under The Lake's music, an original sound that Don Dilorio of the North Jersey Herald and News says "doesn't sit easy in any category, thanks to its heavy doses of funkified bass and occasional soul references." It's an sound that Under The Lake refers to as "jazz, groove and attitude." Featuring Nat Caranto on alto sax and John Moak on trombone, the two horn line-up and UTL's original compositions are keeping the soul jazz sound made famous by The Crusaders alive.

Floralyn George

Pop Singer/Songwriter, Model who plays the Electric Harp. Her aim is to take the harp out of its classical/folk frame and bring it to the broad world of pop music. Her unique voice has an outstanding vocal range and dynamic. She stands out with her unique mesmerizing sound and incredible talent. For her age, Floralyn has a very mature presence on stage and her strong live performances combined with her dreamy vibrations gives you a new extremely magical experience which is impossible to forget.

Revolators

Stripped back guitar grooves; infused with soul, rock, funk and high octane rhythm & blues. Original finely crafted songs.

The Boston Shakers - Wasted EP Review

The Boston Shakers are a band I have had the pleasure of reviewing in the past. They are a six -piece originally from France and USA ,whom are now based in Liverpool, England formed out of the love of music and wanting to have a good time. The friends decided to conceive a band based on the blend of genres they linked with the nightlife of Liverpool and they had experienced as bartenders. The band infuse electronic beats, hip-hop, blues and hard rock to formulate an explosion of fun loving music.

The lads now release their much anticipated debut EP, Wasted. A sonic boom of electronic beats, fuzzy guitars and effusive rapping. This is certainly a good start for the band, and promises not to disappoint. This is a no-filler that begins with opener Ready For You, a no - nonsense sucker punch of a party anthem that is suitable for the first track with a delicious looping blues riff that incorporates the brash lyrical content and overall swagger of the rapping that has similarities to early Kasabian when they first broke onto the British music scene.

Wasted  is a more mellow and hazy journey of reflection with those swirling electronic beats and reverb induced riffs that enshroud your brain. I feel this is the moment for the album to take a backburner before the fun erupts again.

Body ,Mind and Soul  is sure to win over new listeners with its backbeats of blues guitar stylings and breakdowns that bend and distort like a good trip. The rhythmic section transitions throughout with the mix of heavy beats and prosthetic rapping that is sure to get fans dancing.

Oblivion is another energetic track that steeps with early indie rock influences such as Manchester bands like Oasis and The Stone Roses that keeps the album musically invested . This gives the EP another opportunity to show it is varied with prolific syntax. They know how to write songs about social observations of modern culture.

All Out is one of the lead singles of the track, which is a high octane blizzard of beats and cultivated riffs that have influences from those aforementioned bands. A catchy chorus and expansive breakdowns that are ingredients for success.

Black Magic is one of the more rocking tracks that starts with a heavy riff and intense rapping with the inclusion of melodic bridges at the chorus that defines the track. The swinging rhythm and full throttle nature of the track can’t prevent you from throwing your fists in the air.

Best Things  is another lung-busting upbeat track with hypnotic beats and simple chord patterns that can stir any dancefloor with a cutthroat blue infused solo that is as psychedelic as the breakdown of multi layered programming .

Plastic Bag is another indie rock track full of stirring guitar hooks and hip swinging rock n roll.

The Boston Shakers Wasted EP is now available via Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify , Google play, and other good music outlets.

If you like the band, you can catch them perform at Wolvesfest on June 16 at Wolverhampton Rugby Club, Wolverhampton, England.

QOK LIve at Small Country Campground

QOK we'll be at Small Country Campground next Saturday celebrating Father's Day weekend with camping and music!

Open to the public, Admission $10 for ages 16 and up (including campers) Come enjoy great bands, vendors, food and brews! Keep an eye out for a list of participating bands and a list of our awesome vendors coming soon!

About The Band

Q.O.K. has been building a buzz in the suburbs of Northern Virginia as a young alternative pop/rock band of siblings with mature tastes in music and a great chemistry on stage - but they’re far from your average “family band”.
The band originally started in 2009 when drummer Hallie Roberts began taking lessons at the age of 6. Guitarist/songwriter Jerald Roberts and bassist Loren Roberts were already journeymen of their craft. The only logical step was to recruit keyboardist/vocalist Ingrid Roberts, and singer/songwriter Kristyn Roberts to complete the quintet. Over the next 8 years Q.O.K. grew and developed. The days of late night Guitar Hero World Tour grew into local festivals filled with cover music, which turned into recording & performing original tunes.

About The Venue

It was in this state of neglect when Ruth Small saw a small ad in the March 6, 1968 Washington Post which read “52 acres, more or less, $100 down and $100 per month” and a telephone number. After a quick visit by Bill and Ruth and their three children, the purchase was made and the Small Family had a country get-away from the daily grind of Washington, DC, while Ruth and Bill both worked in and around the Capital until 1996. The Small kids Suzy, Billy and Bryan began what became a farm enterprise, starting with raising game chickens and goats during their weekend visits to “Small’s Back Acres.”  This grew, next with rabbits, and turkeys, pigs, horses, cows, and then a young bull buffalo named Ralph!  Many campers still remember Ralph and the horses from the first few years of the campground. Within a short time, a vision was born – of the Small Family sharing this inspiring getaway with others in need of a getaway and an experience in nature. By the fall of 1975 ground was broken for the first 55 campsites (water and electric only), the store and bathhouse, the electric building and pumphouse. On the weekend of May 14, 1976, a momentous time in our story, the first campers poured in to fill our campground! In celebration of our grand opening, visitors gathered around (in a mist!) to hear Suzy Small and a friend play a two hour serenade of song and guitar accompaniment. Within a year of opening, we ventured further into our wonderful and exciting dreams by building Lake Ruth Ann, our beautiful 25-acre lake.

The band blend modern rock with metalcore and grooves to create their own brand of pulsating metal that could break the current mold of contemporaries. OSFTE combine clean and harsh vocals with earth- shattering drum fills, dual harmonic guitar riffs that will leave the goosebumps standing. They have already recorded an album, the 2017 “Beneath the Surface”, and are currently in the studio working on a follow up, which is due for release this summer.

Meanwhile, I will be having a sift through that debut to introduce the readers to the band;

The opening sequence is a two-minute prelude entitled The Beginning (Intro) that is a precursor to the album’s self-titled track Beneath the Surface, a foot stomping, head banging cacophony of raw metalcore that sets the scene with its dark grooves that leads into intense growls that showcase what the band can produce going forward. The intense riffing combined with clear, melodic vocals work well against the juxtaposition of guttural vocals that roar into play.

https://open.spotify.com/track/1Rs45cqB4EOOxlvd17BisF - Beneath the Surface

State of the Mind: Denial continue the transient hostility with another strong track that focuses more on the clear vocals that makes this the more harrowing between the jolts of screams. This track is finely layered with some nice breaks coming at key intervals and a whirlpool of a guitar solo arriving midway. This is another standout track to keep listeners keen.

https://open.spotify.com/track/4FFcGnqKvXXS5fHzr3HqDk - State of the Mind: Denial

The album continues through its exploration following the start with a leaning more towards the modern rock of NWOAHM bands from the 2000’S, which feel like an identity loss with several tracks sounding similar before reaching Waver, an example of how the band use syncopated riffs with pounding drums to create the notion of a machine gun that adds a hostile texture to the increasingly emotional clear vocals. I feel this side of the music changes rapidly throughout.

https://open.spotify.com/track/7zmdNvfdvSO6DoNyI2qX2S - Waver

The album wraps up with focus on this aspect of the band, which sounds more like their hard rock stylings before wrapping up with the aptly named the End, which sounds like a gothic version of Metallica's The Unforgiven replete with dual harmonic voicings along the exquisite acoustic back drop of flamenco finger pickings.

You can listen the album here.

The Gift Of Music During This Christmas Season

Madison Roe

Compared to the likes of James Bay, Amy Winehouse, Hozier and Ed Sheeran, Madison Roe knocks off this early Christmas gift from us to you. An indie-rock singer from Kauai, Hawaii, she is well-known for her soulful lyrics and melody. Madison recently released her debut EP, Changing Colors, and has plans for a sophomore release in 2019.

https://www.facebook.com/MadisonRoeOfficial/ - Madison's Facebook profile is one of the more engaging accounts I have come across. It is well-maintained and the posts will constantly include a video or an image. She has a plethora of photographs, the majority of them being less promotional; for instance, there are behind the scenes shots of a music video, and even some of her buying a guitar. My favourite element is the video section where she posts numerous acoustic covers including one from her teenage years. The real downfall is her biography page. Contact details are available, but there is no personal information and more links to other social media would be useful.

https://www.instagram.com/madisonroeofficial/ - it is obvious that Madison prefers Facebook to Instagram based on the types of pictures available. While Facebook is very 'natural', Instagram has more press images and live videos. It is a well-maintained account and enjoyable to look at, but I would choose her Facebook over this any day.

http://www.madisonroe.com/ - Did I mention Madison was a model? No. Well, it is quite obvious considering the effect of the images. Her official website's landing page has a stunning image with a very prominent menu, making it easy to navigate. However, if you're interested in music, you need only scroll down to view videos and playlists of her EPs. I have no concerns for this website, or maybe I'm too stunned by her photographs.

MosesMo And The Real Cool Band

Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, Moses Moore is one of the well-known artists in the funk rock genre heading Mother's Finest. Now with his band - a real cool band - the five-piece are making waves by following this Music Hall of Fame inductee. A guitarist and songwriter for over forty years, Moses is re-ignited dirty South blues funk rock with inspiration from Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and the Rolling Stones. Of course, MosesMo does have some solo projects every now and then with his latest solo album, Two Ton Message, released in 2018.

https://www.facebook.com/MosesMoandTheRCB/ - MosesMo takes pride in his Facebook profile keeping it well-maintained with regular posts and updates. There is a plethora of videos, mostly live videos which are enjoyable to watch. Furthermore, there are many photographs giving the fan insight into the band's live performances. Some reviews are available promoting engagement with fans; as well as a band profile giving access to a playlist and music videos. What I enjoy the most is the Facebook live stream facility and access to their latest album. I have no recommendations for this profile and only look forward to additional posts.

https://www.instagram.com/mosesmomf/ - MosesMo provides another engaging social media profile with many live images and videos, as well as some personal pics to give people insight into who Mo is. I enjoy this profile because it is humble and not something you'd expect from a Georgia Music Hall of Fame inductee.

https://mosesmo.com/ - when you arrive on the MosesMo official website, you are immediately stared down by Mo himself. A super cool picture with an easy to access menu makes the landing page ideal. As you scroll down, you'll discover music, a mailing list opt-in and some links to social media platforms. I am unsure why the music tab requires registration to view, but every other area of the website is easy to peruse. Moreover, the colour scheme is easy on a person's eyes.

The Worn Out Soles

Beginning as a threesome from Knoxville, Tennessee, The Worn Out Soles soon become a quartet with the addition of a fourth member. This alternative rock group draws inspiration from Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Doors and Stone Temple Pilots. The Worn Out Soles released their self-titled debut album in 2018.

The Worn Out Soles are:

Nathan Forman on vocals and guitar.
Nick Voorhees on guitar.
Adam King on bass.
Brain J. Wright on drums.

https://www.facebook.com/thewornoutsoles/ - The Worn Out Soles use their Facebook account for promotional purposes exclusively. It is not very well-maintained, but does what a band profile needs to do. A plethora of images is available, but they are mostly live performances or merchandise images. Access is also available to gig listings and their debut album via a band profile widget. I would recommend updating the biography section with some more background information and links to social media accounts.

https://www.instagram.com/thewornoutsoles/ - if you want to view a band Instagram with life performance images, then you've come to the right one. The Worn Out Soles are still new and unsigned, but they could attempt to find a balance between more personal images and promotional items. Think a picture of your dog playing a guitar in a Christmas hat - something like that.

https://www.reverbnation.com/thewornoutsoles/ - A basic Reverbnation profile acts as The Worn Out Soles' official website. I enjoy Reverbnation profiles because they provide me with everything I need as a fan and a writer - press images, music, a biography and shows. I recommend that The Worn Out Soles extend their biography slightly.

Niki J. Crawford

Niki J. Crawford is a soul funk singer hailing from the small town of Springhill, Louisiana. Starting at the age of six, this groovy gal has progressed from hometown church choirs to sharing the stage with All Green, The Roots, Carlos Santana and even Snoop Dogg. Multi-talented, Niki is not only a powerful voice but also a dynamic actress. She recently completed filming 'Revival', a film based on the gospel of John. She has also performed in 'Mr. Sophistication' alongside Rick Fox and Tatum O'Neal. Yet, her first love is music and she continues to person with a passion and sensuality that inspires and promotes positivity.

https://www.facebook.com/NikiJCrawfordMusic/ - Niki's Facebook is a relatively well-maintained one with posts focusing mainly on the promotional element of her career. Several photographs and videos are available, with engaging personal shots available. She has also placed a band profile widget on the account giving fans access to a playlist and official music videos. My main concern is the social media links being further down on the page instead of in the allocated areas. Yes, you do have access to Instagram and Twitter, but you have to search for it.

https://www.instagram.com/nikijcrawford/ - Niki has a very well-balanced Instagram account with press and personal images. Her live performance pictures are great, and I really enjoy the videos. What I love about this account is how comfortable I feel viewing it. It is as if I am taking a look at a friend's photo album and I just feel, well, at ease.

http://www.nikijcrawford.com/ - the reason a Reverbnation band profile is fantastic as an official website is because it is like opening an EPK. The landing page includes social media links, a subscription opt-in widget, a biography, contact, videos, playlists, and images - everything you could want. In addition, there is a sticky menu that can be easily accessed if you want to view a particular item.

Whim Grace

Describing herself as a fallen angel and world wanderer, Whim Grace is a folk pop singer who attempts to understand this dystopian society with music. Channelling the boundaries of possibility hidden in the cracks of humanity, this singer is inspired by revolution and evolution. Whim released a single, 'Feelin' Alive', in February 2018. Her sound is inspired by Jack White, The Secret Sea and Radiohead.

https://www.facebook.com/whimmusic/ - Whim Grace's Facebook account is one of the more complete profiles I have come across. A plethora of images and videos are available for visitors, as well as a band profile widget allowing access to playlists and official music videos. Gig dates are also available, and the engaging posts are regularly updated. Contact information is available, along with social media account links - so I don't have much more to recommend.

https://www.instagram.com/whimgrace/ - Whim's Instagram account is well-maintained and has a good balance between promotional and personal images. Whim has also placed several videos on the account which are highly engaging for visitors. You can view other elements of Whim Grace's personality in this account with a focus on art and photography. I would recommend a link to contact details in the biography.

https://whimgrace.bandcamp.com/ - by using a Bandcamp account as an official website, Whim Grace is focusing on the sale of her single 'Feelin' Alive'. While this website can offer all the information you desire if you want from a merchandise perspective, it does not offer any press images or any music videos.

Meresha

Barely out of her teens, Meresha has embraced a soulful sound inspired by Annie Lennox and Lorde to release an EP New Revolution. The sometimes eccentric beats bring about older styles into contemporary productions from this DJ. Meresha has performed songs from the album with Third Eye Blind and Adam Lambert. Her most recent album, Enter the Dreamland, is one of All Music's Top 20 Pop Albums of 2017. Her music has been streamed over 14 million times on streaming platforms.

https://www.facebook.com/Mereshas/ - Meresha's Facebook account is a very well-maintained profile that is indicative of her age. Highly engaging with a plethora of non-promotional images and videos, this account is enjoyable to peruse for the average lay person. Meresha has added a band profile allowing access to music videos and playlists. I do recommend placing personal information on her biography page, but the links to social media accounts with contact details are sufficient.

https://www.meresha.com/ - Meresha's official website is neat, offers a manageable primary menu with tabs to all the information you require. She also places links to social media accounts and streaming platforms. If you scroll down on the landing page, you will find a link to her latest release which is highly beneficial. My only recommendation is an email address along with the contact box.

Neil Taylor

Most well known as a guitarist for Tears For Fears and the famous one-take solo on 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World', Neil Taylor is a British artist who has navigated the contemporary rock music industry for over thirty years. After two world tours with Tears For Fears, Neil toured with the likes of Peter Gabriel, The Pretenders, Rod Stewart, and recorded with Robbie Williams on his Sing While You're Winning and Escapology albums. In 2010, Neil began working on his solo career and has released several singles and albums over the past eight years. His latest release is a single called 'Paper Kite'.

https://www.facebook.com/neiltaylormusic/ - Believe it or not, Neil Taylor's Facebook account is one of the more engaging profiles I have come across rivalling quite a few younger bands. Just shows that age has nothing to do with social media. Neil has a plethora of images, quite a few being live performance photos; as well as acoustic performance videos which are enjoyable. I mean, who doesn't want to see a legendary guitarist perform? My one concern is the lack of contact details.

https://www.instagram.com/neil.taylor1/ - if you are hoping to find promotional images on Neil Taylor's Instagram, then you've come to the wrong place! This is a very amusing account with the majority of pictures being selfie-style images and pictures demonstrating the light-hearted personality of this talented man. I love the account despite it not being updated regularly.

https://www.neiltaylor.net/ - Neil's official website is a single landing page with the focus on the 'Paper Kite' single release. If you scroll down you will find more information about Neil, his discography, live performances, a mailing list opt-in and even management details for direct contact. Social media account links are available at the bottom of the page, so it is possible to find his profiles on other platforms.

Fergus McKay & Nothing Concrete

A six-piece blend of swing, blues and folk, Fergus McKay & Nothing Concrete are an international band based in the French Pyrenees. If you add some tap dancing from their brass section into the mix, you will have the makings of a truly unforgettable live performance. The latest album, Jumble Shop Tales, was released at the end of 2018 with much positive response from critics.

https://www.facebook.com/nothingconcrete1/ - Fergus McKay & Nothing Concrete maintain their Facebook account relatively well with regular updates on gigs, releases and reviews. I enjoy the band's performance and this can be seen in their numerous live videos. The band has several images which are press shots mainly, but they also have a band profile available allowing access to a playlist and music videos. I would recommend placing more links to other social media accounts, but otherwise all items seem to be in place.

https://fjsm33.wixsite.com/fergus-mckay - my first note on this website is the background video which made me close the site before I was able to make a decent assessment. It is far too distracting and can prompt a headache, particularly if they are photosensitive. No flashing lights are in the video, but the speedy transitions can be an issue. In many cases, the video would be part of a header and can be paused or scrolled down; however, this is not the instance in Fergus McKay's case.

Musicians To Calm Your Nerves And Soothe Your Ears

Vama

Ranging from indie rock to blues and electro, Vama is a Romanian band with an eclectic music influence that has stunned the world and soothed their ears. The five young men are all highly talented in their respective musical fields including a co-writer of a rock opera, a music producer, and a blues artist with a musical ancestry. The songs are distinctive and their lyrics are striking, but what makes Vama unique is their enthusiastic live performance. Having worked together for a decade, the members enjoy a familiarity making them a force to be reckoned with.

Vama is:

Tudor Chirila on vocals.
Eugen Caminschi on guitar.
Gelu Ionescu on keyboard.
Dan Opris on bass guitar.
Lucian Cioarga on drums.

https://www.instagram.com/vamamusic/ - Vama's Instagram account is well-maintained and provides fans with many live performance images. It focuses primarily on performance, but also has promotional images. It is obvious from these pictures that Vama are exuberant artists that interact well with each other. I don't have any recommendations for improvement as their manager's details are in the biography.

https://www.reverbnation.com/vama - similar to many other bands, Vama have a Reverbnation profile. This is beneficial because it provides a band biography, access to social media accounts, a playlist, videos, gig listings and press images. I would recommend placing contact details in the biography. While there is a contact box, this is not always reliable.

http://www.vamamusic.ro/ - I am unsure if this is an official website, but if it is I would recommend changing it entirely. It is more of a landing page with a link to Vama's YouTube, their store and a subscription option. It should also be noted that all information is in Romanian without the option of Google translation.

Demi The Daredevil

Hailing from El Paso, Texas, Demi the Daredevil (also known as Jeff Azar), is an art pop/glam rock/emo mastermind. Originally the drummer of the band, he was forced to take the lead after the death of original frontman, Jovan Ortiz. Since then, his tumultuous experiences in psychiatric hospitals from 2009 to 2011 inspired the poetic lyrics and dark theatrics. In 2016, Jeff released a well-received EP called Secret Schizoid. Described as raw and relatable, his influences include My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson and Prince.

https://www.facebook.com/demithedaredevil/ - Demi the Daredevil embodies the word 'art' and fully understands engagement. This Facebook profile is relatively well-maintained, but the posts are hardly promotional focusing more on mental health and personal well-being. Jeff is an artist that obviously cares about his fans, and wants people to realise they do not need to deal with difficult situations alone. Fan art can be found on the profile, along with videos and event listings. I would recommend placing links to other social media sites.

https://www.instagram.com/demithedaredevil/ - Jeff's Instagram profile is well-maintained with various press images, but there are also different videos to keep fans engaged. I enjoy the press images as they are artistic, and, well, I'm just a fan of this style. While a link to the official website is in the biography, I would recommend some contact details.

http://www.demithedaredevil.com/ - the official website opens with a rather exquisite press image prompting the viewer to 'listen now' to his latest release. Jeff's site is quite well laid-out with videos and a biography on the landing page. The menu is easily found and navigable at the top, and links to various social media accounts are at the bottom. In fact, you can even download some free songs if you click the correct tab. My only recommendation is placing a contact address along with the mailing box. While contact boxes are useful, they are not always reliable.

CASME'

As the eldest of eight children, Casme is a natural born leader - a quality that can be seen in her music and non-musical career. In addition to being a singer-songwriter, Casme is also a dancer, motivational speaker, fashion designer, humanitarian, and even an actor. She has been featured on TBS's House of Payne, Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself and The Braxton Families. However, she is as comfortable off the set as she is on the set. Her vocals are bold and the lyrics portray an artistic brilliance that is not often seen. Casme's inspirations include Lauren Hill, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Eryka Badu.

https://www.facebook.com/IAMCASME/ - what immediately strikes me about Casme's Facebook account is the personal nature from a professional perspective. A very well-maintained profile with constant updates including images, videos, gig details and engaging language. This is an artist that obviously cares about music and her fans. She has also placed a Reverbnation band widget on the site, so people are able to access playlists. Detailed contact information is available, but I would recommend placing links to other social media websites.

https://www.instagram.com/iamcasme/ - hardly the expert of Instagram, but I do know a good page when I see one. Casme has utilised her account to its fullest offering both press images and some personal photographs. I still need to become used to the videos on Instagram, but I enjoy them when I see them. The fact that she has over 29 thousand followers and just over 1,500 posts say something about her social media marketing skills. I would recommend placing some contact details in the biography section.

https://www.iamcasme.com/ - Casme's official website is funky and cool, but it doesn't present with some vital elements. The focus on the 'Funkdelik' music video is significant, and her menu is easily navigable; however, there are no links to social media accounts. A biography is available, videos, images and contacts are available - once again, no social media accounts. I like the website, I truly do. I just think Casme should realise the importance of Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Leah Woods

Leah Woods is one of those artsy types that you imagine sitting in the corner of a coffee shop strumming along on her guitar and singing a Carol King song. Barely into her twenties, she has already appeared with pop sensation Charlie Puth, supported Victoria Canal and opened for Daphne Willis. A talented songwriter, Leah helped co-write Cole King's 'Dead End' and Ace Cosgrove's 'My Fault'. Of course, her soulful voice could not be stifled and her debut album, Brighter Tides, can be found on all streaming platforms.

https://www.facebook.com/LeahWoodsMusic/ - Leah's Facebook is a relatively well-maintained social media account, and is a very engaging one when posts are made. What I mean by this is the posts are often accompanied by acoustic performances by Leah or personal images from Leah. It's indicative of her age and a desire to connect with her fans. I'm particularly keen on the header video showing Leah skateboarding, which is a nice touch. I would recommend links to her other social media accounts, along with a biography.

https://www.instagram.com/leahwoodsmusic/ - similar to her Facebook account, Leah Woods' Instagram is a rather personalised one with more fewer promotional images than most of the bands I have come across. I believe it works well considering her type of music, but I do recommend placing contact details in the biography.

https://leahwoodsmusic.com/ - Leah's official website is very basic, but has most of what a musician would require. The focus is on her debut album, Brighter Tides, but if you scroll down on the landing page you will find some gig dates and a biography. Social media links are noticeable at the bottom, along with music streaming facilities. I would recommend that a separate page be created for the playlist and include this in the menu.

Ilya Setrakian

Starting his musical journey at age three when he asked his father for piano lessons, Ilya Setrakian is a singer/songwriter from New York. While his initial training is classical, he injected jazz, soul and improvisation into his music during high school being influenced greatly by Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder. After high school, Ilya attended the New York University of the Arts, and it was this education that helped develop him as the artist he is today. He currently released his second EP, I Never Knew, that is available on all major streaming platforms.

https://www.facebook.com/ilyasetrakianmusic/ - Ilya's Facebook profile is not very well-maintained, but it is maintained with a few posts each month keeping people updated on all happenings. The posts promote new gigs, events and provide press photos which are available on the account. Not many videos are available, but the few that are there can be enjoyable to view. I would recommend adding social media links in the personal information section.

https://www.instagram.com/ilyasetrakian/ - Ilya seems to take more interest in his Instagram as compared to the Facebook account. This is a more well-maintained social media platform with a plethora of live images and videos. I enjoy this account and its balance between promotional and personal images, but I would advise contact details in the biography.

https://www.reverbnation.com/ilyasetrakian - I always enjoy bands using Reverbnation profiles as their official websites - they provide an artist with everything they need. You have a biography, a playlist, music videos, shows and press images. My only concern is the placement of a potential contact address as contact boxes are not always reliable.

The Soul Mutation

I always enjoy writing about artists from Europe because, well, most of the bands I work with are either from the UK or USA. Hailing from Bergamo, Italy, The Soul Mutation is one of the more unique artists I have come across. Combining electronic grooves with a clear jazz improvisation, Martha, Francesco Chebat, and Francesco Marzetti demonstrate their influences as Brad Mehldau, Mark Guiliana and Robert Glasper.

The Soul Mutation is:

Martha J. on vocals.
Francesco Chebat on keyboard.
Francesco Marzetti on drums.

https://www.facebook.com/thesoulmutation/ - The Soul Mutation use their Facebook profile as a promotional resource and nothing else. With one or two posts per month, sometimes a month will go by without a post; this band focuses on making music and performances instead of social media. Several live performance images are available, along with some videos; however, these are a minimal amount considering the account was opened five years ago. I would recommend a link to other social media sites, such as YouTube on the personal information page. I do enjoy the shop widget so people can access albums from the Facebook account.

http://www.thesoulmutation.com/ - The Soul Mutation's landing page is an attractive image, but you need to scroll down to find the menu or any other information. When you head down, you'll discover that everything you need is available ranging from a biography and videos to press images with gig dates. Links to other social media accounts are available at the bottom of the page, along with a contact email. It is a well-structured page, but you could miss details if you don't keep an eye out for them.

Buel

While she is based in Los Angeles, Buel was born and raised in Turkey. An indie-pop artist who began her musical journey at a young age, she draws her inspiration from Nirvana, The Cranberries, and Sixpence None The Richer. During her teenage years, she played mostly cover songs; however, she eventually performed original compositions during college as part of her band Boot. In 2015, Buel decided to pursue a career outside of Turkey after graduating and, as fate would have it, her music caught the attention of an Ohio music management agent. In only five months, Buel was able to build a strong following in Ohio, but she understood the grassroots approach to making a name for herself. Buel has her debut EP available ready for release in early 2019.

https://www.facebook.com/buelmusic/ - Buel's Facebook profile is a relatively well-maintained account, but it focuses primarily on promotional items. While there are a few posts per month, the posts share gigs or have an image attached with very little engagement. This doesn't mean Buel's Facebook is a pointless account as she offers access to playlists and videos. She has provided contact details, but I'm not sure if this is the official management account.

https://www.instagram.com/buelmusic/ - Buel obviously pays more attention to her Instagram account as there is an ideal balance between press images, live photographs and personal pictures (including videos). I really enjoy this account because it seems more personal to me, and she has a really pleasant face. I would recommend listing a contact detail, but the official website and link to music video is useful.

http://www.buelmusic.co/ - Buel's official website is a basic landing page focusing on her latest videos. If you are looking for a biography, she presents decent background information; along with some delightful pictures. It is plain to see that Buel takes great interest in photography. The links to other social media platforms are clearly available, but I would recommend an email address along with the contact box.

The Rotation

Have you heard of sax rock? Well, if you haven't then let The Rotation be your introduction! A sensational six-piece from Madison, Wisconsin, this band combines pop, funk, rock and R&B to form a unique sound. The saxophones place a new twist on old classics, but they also provide a range of original compositions. The Rotation draws inspiration from Reel Big Fish, John Coltrane, The Doors and Sublime.

The Rotation is:

Nic on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
Marcus on lead guitar and vocals.
Bradley on bass.
Nick on tenor saxophone.
Eric on alto saxophone and vocals.
Matt on drums.

https://www.facebook.com/therotation/ - The Rotation's Facebook profile is not a well-maintained account, but it offers a person what they need. The posts are not very engaging and are promotional, but there are several live images giving you a taste of what The Rotation is all about performance-wise. The band has placed a Reverbnation widget on the Facebook profile allowing access to videos, playlists, gig listings and press information. The biography is basic, but there are contact details available. I would recommend links to other social media accounts, such as Twitter.

http://www.therotationmusic.com - The Rotation's official website presents with an easily navigable menu, social media links and a subscription opt-in as soon as you open the page. As you scroll down you come across press quotes, music playlists, videos, biography and images. My only concern is the lack of contact information.

Since you've come so far ...

.... we would like to inform you about The Old School Project's operation. Over time, the number of people interested in The Old School Project has steadily increased. Unlike other websites and online media, the core of The Old School Project is not the well-known journalists and radio producers, but the young people in the field of journalism who nevertheless worthy of their place. Therefore, the resources for running The Old School Project, which requires time, money and hard work, come only from its physical place, the coffeehouse.

So to continue to provide our services to upcoming bands / artists, giving the opportunity to new journalists publish their articles, and to develop our innovative ideas, we ask you to devote a minute of your time and become a part of The Old School Project.
