Detention – Akron, OH / USA

Detention is a high-energy band of teens from Akron, Ohio. The band gives explosive live performances, locks into heavy pulsing grooves and adds textured guitars with pops of frenetic, shredding solos. They performed at the world-famous Whisky a Go Go in LA and had crowd-surfing fans as they won the 24th Annual Tri-C High School Rock Off at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH. About their winning performance, Barry Gabel, Senior VP for Live Nation said: “The band was tight, fun, exciting, and had the audience going crazy!”

Detention includes lead singer Elliott Carter (16), bassist Fritz Dannemiller (17), drummer Luke Konopka (14); and guitarist Evans Cox (13).

Detention’s music is a mash-up of its collective influences, which range from Green Day, the Black Keys, Eminem, Tyler the Creator, Mom Jeans, and Ani DiFranco. The result is part teenage angst and humor and part life growing up in the post-industrial Midwest.

Detention missed a few gigs due to the pandemic such as playing in Austin, Texas during the postponed SXSW Music Festival, Devo Devotional, Lock 3, and PorchRokr. They have played a few virtual events such as the Montauk Music Festival, The Rialto Theater, Record Store Day, and WBWC Loclegrown.

Detention is on Spotify playlists such as DIY Discover and DIY Hits! Rock by topleftbooking, @TOUGHSCENECLEVELAND_ and on the album “Where the Hell is Akron Ohio? Vol 3”

Detention is often heard on Brews Radio, WAPS 91.3 The Summit and rocked a sold-out live performance for a Studio C Session. They were featured on WKYC Channel 3 News and with Tony Rizzo on The Really Big Show on WKNR ESPN Cleveland. Rizzo heard their version of “Helter Skelter” and wouldn’t stop talking about “these kids from Akron”.

Detention hasn’t missed a beat and spent the quarantine recording three new songs and releasing new videos such as 56 minutes and In Reverse. Pre-COVID the band regularly packed shows around Northeast Ohio and is starting to create a regional footprint – driven by consistent radio play of four self-released singles, “Devilberries”, “Emphatic YES!”, “In Reverse”, “56 Minutes” and their latest single “Dead Malls”.
